RECOVERY FROM A-Z

FOUR DIMENSIONS OF RECOVERY

The four dimensions are a concept developed by SAMHSA to support life in recovery. They include health, home, purpose, and community.

  • Health: Abstaining from illicit drugs, non-prescribed medication, misuse of alcohol, and making informed, healthy choices that support physical and emotional well-being.

  • Home: A stable and safe place to live.

  • Purpose: Meaningful daily activities, such as a job, school, volunteerism, family caretaking, or creative endeavors, as well as independence, income, and resources to participate in society.

  • Community: Relationships and social networks that provide support, friendship, love, and hope.
