Prevention addresses the underlying causes of substance use disorder, how to safeguard our families and youth, and how to prevent the onset of addiction. As per the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), prevention helps people develop the knowledge, attitudes, and skills they need to make good choices or change harmful behaviors. Early substance use increases a person's likelihood of developing an addiction. Remember that drugs alter the brain, which can result in addiction and other significant issues. Therefore, preventing the early use of drugs or alcohol may significantly reduce these risks.
