RECOVERY FROM A-Z

WHAT IS RECOVERY?

There is no singular definition for recovery, but they do have in common a primary goal of wellbeing both physically and mentally.

The dictionary definition of recovery is “a return to a normal state of health, mind, or strength.”

Here are other ways to define recovery:

  • SAMHSA defines recovery from substance use disorder as “a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential.”

  • Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT): Recovery from alcohol and drug problems is a process of change through which an individual achieves abstinence and improved health, wellness, and quality of life. (2005)

  • Betty Ford Institute: A voluntarily maintained lifestyle characterized by sobriety, personal health, and citizenship. (2006)

  • Connecticut Community of Addition Recovery (CCAR): You are in recovery when you say you are.
